The image of Wu Shen
Wu (戊) is Yang Earth: mountains, dikes, the ground under a city. Shen (申), the Monkey, is the Metal of early autumn, from early August into early September, when the first cool winds arrive. Inside the branch lie Geng (庚) Metal, Ren (壬) Water and Wu (戊) Earth, its hidden stems (藏干, cang gan). Picture a mountain threaded with ore and a spring, giving up its riches to whoever works it.
The nayin (纳音, na yin), an older layer of imagery that gives each of the sixty pairs an element, is Earth of the Great Post Road (大驿土, da yi tu), the imperial relay road where couriers changed horses; here it runs through a mountain pass. Among the twelve growth stages (十二长生, shi er chang sheng), Wu sits at Sickness (病, bing), a dramatic name that simply marks energy flowing outward into what the mountain produces.

Does the Sickness stage mean health problems for Wu Shen?
No. The twelve growth stages borrow the vocabulary of a life cycle to describe how strong a stem feels on a branch, and Sickness only means Wu Earth's energy is flowing outward here rather than gathering. It says nothing about your body. For any health question, a qualified professional is the right person to ask.
What does the Great Post Road nayin mean for Wu Shen?
The post road was the network of relay stations that carried messages across old China. For Wu Shen it suggests usefulness through connection: the mountain becomes a route. Traditionally it describes someone who links people, places and information, and whose value grows the more others travel through their work.
